MUSCULOSKELETAL TREATMENTS

Your health and wellbeing is our priority

The primary objectives of musculoskeletal (MSK) treatment are to restore optimal biomechanics by:

  • correcting articulation, maltracking, and joint restrictions
  • reducing protective muscular guarding, and reversing ligamentous shortening
  • improving nerve flow and neuromuscular coordination, ensuring the nervous system can effectively communicate with the musculoskeletal system

Achieving these goals requires a multi-modal approach tailored to the patient's specific needs and stage of recovery.

INTEGRATED TREATMENT METHODS

To reach our clinical treatment goals, various methods are employed, each targeting a specific component of the MSK system and yet work together to provide you comfort and improvement.

MOBILISATION AND MANIPULATION

Manual techniques involving skilled passive movements of the joints.

Mobilisation and manipulation help to restore the joint “glide” and “slide” mechanics. Mobilisation uses gentle, rhythmic oscillations to reduce stiffness and “maltracking,” while manipulation (a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust) is used to rapidly restore joint play.

They also redistribute tissue loading to encourage collagen remodeling. These methods achieve treatment goals by breaking down periarticular adhesions, stretching shortened ligaments, and providing a “neuro-reset” that reduces muscular guarding.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release natural analgesics.

The nervous system is stimulated by inserting fine needles into specific trigger points or anatomical sites.

Acupuncture modulates pain signals and reflex muscle relaxation.

This method is particularly effective at reducing deep muscular guarding and “resetting” the tone of overactive muscles, thereby facilitating better blood flow and nerve conduction to the affected area.

PHYSICAL MODALITIES

Therapeutic tools used by to reduce pain, improve circulation, and enhance tissue healing.

Tools such as ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), or heat/cold therapy are utilised to manage inflammation and pain.

These achieve treatment goals by altering tissue permeability and desensitising irritated nerves, which creates a “window of opportunity” for more active movement and rehabilitation.

REHABILITATION EXERCISES

Rehabilitation exercises focused on restoring mobility, strengthening and supporting muscles, and preventing future pain.

Exercises are prescribed in progressive stages — from early-stage isometric contractions to late-stage functional loading.

These are essential for maintaining the gains made through manual therapy; they strengthen the muscles to prevent future maltracking, promote long-term ligamentous remodeling, and refine the coordination of nerve flow during complex movements.

They also help to reduce mechanical pressure on nerves and improve signal timing.

REFERRALS

Our professional network

For conditions that require further investigation and treatment, we have a strong local referral network including the Vale Nuffield Hospital, the Spire Hospital, and the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic.
